| Core Training: Understanding and Managing Fonts | Jan 13, 2012 | | For designers and IT professionals, fonts are either a constant thorn in the side or a complete and utter mystery, causing workflow disruption, failed printing, application crashes and other problems. The alphabet soup of font technologies is overwhelming for even the most seasoned designer and IT professional. Type 1, TrueType, OTF, TTF, dfont, multiple master... The list goes on. In over 20 years of desktop publishing, font management has only gotten more difficult and confusing. And the troubles are just beginning. Attending this course will prepare you for the impending industry transition to OpenType fonts as well as provide a detailed look at everything fonts.
From Type 1 to OpenType. From FontDA Mover to Suitcase Fusion. From QuickDraw to CoreText. This class covers everything from the historical significance of font development to the current trends and directions of topography and font technologies. Topics include: the history of fonts and topography, understanding font formats, a review of font management tools, font trends, application support and interaction, management strategies, and a look to the future.
This class is intended for professional designers and IT professionals who manage Macintosh environments. The class will not teach topographic design concepts. The goal of the course is to provide insight into what fonts are, how you work with them, and how to win the battle against them. |

This course is an introduction to InDesign for seasoned Quark pros. Learn how to remap the keyboard to ease the transition. Learn about the different but oddly familiar ways of setting up master pages, style sheets, tables, and much more.
To speed your migration the course also provides an introduction to Q2ID Plug-in by Markzware®. This InDesign® plugin will help ease the pain of migration years of Quark documents to InDesign. Common pitfalls will be revealed to make the process easy and nearly error free.

| Core Training: Command Line Administration | Jan 27, 2012 | | OS X's real power is at the command prompt. While Apple has done a tremendous job hiding the UNIX underpinnings, it is the command line capabilities of OS X that make the machine a powerhouse of flexibility and management. Unlocking that power can be intimidating to many users. However, command line administration is approachable and beneficial, eventually indispensable, for all administrators of OS X and OS X Server.
From atsutil to xattr and everything in between. The class covers common command line tools for navigation, editing, management, monitoring, and administration of OS X and OS X Server. The class will provide an immersion into command line usage, introduce students to shell scripting, Apple Remote Desktop administration using UNIX commands, and hidden configuration options settable only from command line. All activities are based on practical experiences that can be applied to nearly every environment.
This class is intended for IT professionals and Macintosh power users. The class is extensively hands on and will mostly be presented in the command line. Use of the Finder will be limited. Prior experience with command line administration helpful but not required. The class is one day with an optional second day for advanced OS X Server command line administration. Students are not required to attend both days.
